The short answer
The best sunrise in Bali is from the summit of Mount Batur, where you watch the light come up over the caldera lake with Mount Agung and, on clear mornings, Lombok's Mount Rinjani on the horizon. If you do not want a 2am start and a two-hour climb, the easiest beautiful sunrise is on Sanur Beach, a short drive from the south coast hotels. For something in between, the village viewpoint at Pinggan in Kintamani gives you a volcano sunrise without any hiking at all.
Bali sits just south of the equator, so the sun rises at roughly the same hour all year, but not exactly. The earliest sunrise comes in mid-November at about 5:48am, the latest in mid-July at about 6:35am, and in early October it is around 6:00am. First light arrives 20 to 30 minutes earlier, and that is when you want to be in place. The east and north coasts and the volcanic highlands are where sunrise belongs; the famous west-facing beaches of Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu are for sunset.
Mount Batur: the classic
Batur rises to about 1,717 meters, and the standard route takes most people around two hours up in the dark. Tours from the south pick you up around 1:30am, from Ubud around 2:30am, and you reach the rim before first light. The reward is a view across the caldera to Mount Agung and the steam vents around you, followed by breakfast on the crater. In practice you will hike with a local guide, and you will share the summit with a few hundred people in high season.
It is worth it on a clear morning and disappointing in cloud, so aim for the dry season. Our full guide to whether the Batur sunrise hike is worth it covers prices, difficulty and the jeep alternative.
Lempuyang: the Gates of Heaven
The split gate at Lempuyang Temple in Karangasem frames Mount Agung, and early morning is the only sensible time to go. Understand one thing before you set the alarm: the gate faces Agung, not the sunrise. You are there for the soft dawn light on the volcano and a shorter queue, not to watch the sun break the horizon.
Recent 2026 visitor reports put the entrance at around IDR 100,000 (about USD 6) plus around IDR 50,000 for the compulsory return shuttle up the hill, paid in cash, with a sarong included. The first shuttles run from around 5:30am, and arriving at the shuttle terminal by about 5:15am gets you a low queue number. Later in the morning, waits for the photo at the gate can stretch to two to four hours. From Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak it is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way, so many people stay a night in Sidemen, Candidasa or Amed instead. This is an active temple: dress modestly and follow temple etiquette.
Pinggan village: the volcano view without the climb
Pinggan is a small farming village in the Kintamani highlands, and its hillside viewpoint looks across a valley that often fills with mist at dawn, with Batur and, on clear days, Agung behind it. Plan to be there by about 5:30am, which from Ubud means leaving around 3am. You park and walk a few minutes, so it suits families and anyone who wants the highland atmosphere without the hike. Bring a warm layer: at this altitude, mornings are genuinely cool, often in the mid-teens Celsius. Expect a small parking or entry charge collected in cash by the village, and combine it with breakfast overlooking the caldera in Kintamani.
Sanur: the easy one
Sanur faces east across the Badung Strait, which is why the beach path here was built for sunrise walks. Sindhu Beach and the stretch toward Mertasari are the classic spots, with fishing boats pulled up on the sand, locals swimming at first light and, on clear mornings, Mount Agung to the northeast and Nusa Penida out to sea. It costs nothing, the path is flat and lit by beach cafes opening early, and from Seminyak or Canggu it is about 30 to 45 minutes before the traffic wakes up. Sanur is the right answer for anyone with small children, limited mobility or a late night behind them.
Amed and Lovina: sunrise from the water
On the east coast, Amed gives you sunrise over the sea toward Lombok, with Mount Agung glowing pink behind the village as the light hits it. The viewpoints on the coast road above Jemeluk Bay are the place to stand, and you can be snorkeling on the reef an hour later.
In the north, Lovina is known for its dawn dolphin boats. Traditional outriggers leave around 6am and return in time for breakfast, and a shared seat is roughly IDR 100,000 to 150,000 (about USD 6 to 9). The sunrise itself is soft rather than dramatic, but watching it from a small boat with dolphins surfacing nearby is a memorable way to start the day. Our guide to where to see dolphins in Bali has the details and the ethics.
Sidemen: the quiet valley
Sidemen is a valley of rice terraces in east Bali with Mount Agung rising to the northeast. There is no single viewpoint and no ticket office; you stay in one of the guesthouses on the valley slopes, wake before 6am and watch mist lift off the paddies from your terrace or from the road above the village. Local guides lead easy walks through the fields at first light. It is the opposite of Batur in every way, and many travelers remember it more fondly.
Best months and practical tips
- Season: The dry season, roughly April to October, gives the best odds of a clear horizon, with July to September often the most reliable. In the wet season, November to March, coastal sunrises are still often good, but the highlands are frequently in cloud by dawn.
- Timing: Arrive 30 minutes before the sunrise time for your date. Color usually peaks in the 15 minutes before the sun appears.
- Transport: For Batur, Pinggan and Lempuyang, book a driver or tour; riding a scooter up mountain roads in the dark is not a good idea. Read our guide to getting around.
- Clothing: A fleece or light jacket for anything above about 1,000 meters, and a sarong for temples.
- Weather check: Look at the forecast and a live webcam or recent photos the evening before, and keep a backup morning in your plan.
