The short answer
The most famous sunset in Bali is at Tanah Lot, where the sea temple turns into a silhouette on its rock as the sky burns orange. The most memorable evening, though, is often at Uluwatu Temple, where you watch the sun drop from a 70-meter cliff and then stay for the Kecak fire dance. For a long, lazy sunset with dinner, take a table on the sand at Jimbaran Bay. And if you just want a beer with your feet in the sand, the whole west coast from Pererenan to Seminyak faces the right way.
Sunset in Bali falls between roughly 6:05pm and 6:50pm all year. The earliest comes in late May at about 6:06pm, the latest in late January at about 6:47pm, and in early October it is around 6:15pm. The best color usually comes in the 15 to 20 minutes after the sun disappears, so do not leave the moment it touches the water. The dry season, roughly April to October, gives the most reliable clear horizons; in the wet season, storm clouds can either block everything or produce the most dramatic skies of the year.
Tanah Lot
Tanah Lot sits on a rock just off the coast of Tabanan, about 20 minutes from Canggu and around an hour from Ubud, Kuta or Sanur. Recent sources put the entrance at around IDR 75,000 for adults and IDR 40,000 for children (about USD 5 and 3), with fees that rise most years, and visiting hours of roughly 7am to 7pm. At low tide you can walk across to the base of the rock and receive holy water from the priests; non-Hindus cannot enter the temple itself.
It gets busy, often with several thousand visitors a day, so arrive by about 5pm, walk the cliff path toward the Batu Bolong rock arch, and claim a seat at one of the simple clifftop warungs with a cold drink. The souvenir lanes at the entrance are a lot, but the view is still the real thing.
Uluwatu and the Kecak dance
Uluwatu Temple stands at the southwestern tip of the Bukit peninsula, and its cliff walls face straight into the sunset. Temple entry is around IDR 50,000 for adults and IDR 30,000 for children, sarongs are provided, and the resident long-tailed macaques will steal sunglasses and phones, so keep them in a closed bag. Our guide to monkeys in Bali explains why.
The Kecak fire dance runs at the open-air amphitheater at 6pm, timed so the sun sets behind the performers, with a later show at 7pm in busy periods. Tickets are around IDR 150,000, though some 2026 sources quote up to IDR 200,000 at the gate, and they are charged on top of temple entry. Arrive by 5pm for a good seat, and book ahead in July and August when shows sell out. The performance lasts about an hour, and a chorus of dozens of men chanting the story of the Ramayana as the light fades is one of the great experiences in Bali.
Jimbaran Bay seafood
Jimbaran is a long curve of sand about 15 minutes south of the airport, lined with seafood restaurants that set tables on the beach every evening. You choose your fish, prawns or squid from the ice, it is weighed and grilled over coconut husks, and you eat as the sun goes down and planes drift in toward the runway.
Prices are by weight, and this is where people get caught out. Always ask whether the price is per 100 grams or per kilogram, and watch the fish being weighed. For context, the nearby Kedonganan fish market sells red snapper at around IDR 70,000 to 90,000 per kilo and prawns at IDR 100,000 to 200,000 depending on size; beach restaurants charge considerably more for the setting. Arrive by about 4pm for a front-row table and a swim first.
Canggu, Echo Beach and Pererenan
The black sand beaches of Canggu are where Bali's surf culture watches the sun go down. At Echo Beach, surfers ride the last waves of the day in front of the cafes. At Batu Bolong, beanbags and umbrellas appear on the sand by late afternoon and the beach bars start the music.
A few minutes further west, Pererenan is quieter. The beach is wide, the crowd is mostly locals, long-stayers and surfers, and the walk along the sand toward Seseh at dusk is the most peaceful sunset on this stretch of coast. Bring your own drink and a sarong to sit on, or pick one of the small beach warungs.
Seminyak beach clubs
Seminyak is the home of the Bali beach club, and sunset is its main event. Potato Head charges an entry fee of IDR 200,000 between 4pm and 6:30pm, according to a September 2026 roundup, with free entry at other times. KU DE TA, the island's original beach club, has free entry with a minimum spend for daybeds. Daybeds almost everywhere need a booking and a minimum spend, so reserve a day ahead if you want the front row. If you would rather keep it simple, walk the beach itself, which costs nothing and has the same sky. Our guide to the best things to do in Bali covers more ideas for the evening.
Balangan
On the Bukit, Balangan is a crescent of golden sand under a low cliff, with a row of simple warungs and a clifftop path at the northern end. It is far less crowded than the big-name Bukit beaches, surfers often stay in the water until dark, and the cliff gives you a broad view of the coast curving north toward Kuta. Come for a sunset swim at low to mid tide, then eat at one of the beach warungs.
Timing and traffic tips
- Leave early: The roads from Seminyak and Canggu to Tanah Lot and Uluwatu are slow in late afternoon. Allow at least an hour from Seminyak to Uluwatu and plan to arrive by 5pm.
- Expect a jam after: Everyone leaves Uluwatu and Tanah Lot at the same moment. Stay for dinner nearby and let the traffic clear.
- Use a driver: A driver who waits for you is easier than finding a ride from Uluwatu after dark. See our guide to Gojek, Grab and private drivers.
- Check the tide: Low tide matters for walking out at Tanah Lot and for beaches like Balangan.
- Bring cash: Temple entry, parking and many warungs are cash only.
