Is August a good time to visit Bali?
Weather-wise, August is about as good as Bali gets. It sits in the heart of the dry season, with sunny days, low humidity, cool nights in the hills and clear water for diving and snorkeling. The catch is that everyone knows it. August is the peak of the European summer holidays, so it is the busiest and most expensive month of the dry season, and the famous spots are crowded from mid-morning on.
That does not mean you should avoid it. It means you should book early, start your days early and plan around one of the liveliest months on the Balinese calendar, with Independence Day on August 17, the tail end of kite season and, in 2027, Galungan.
The weather: dry, sunny and breezy
Long-term averages for Denpasar put August at around 29°C by day and 23°C at night, and it is, with September, one of the two driest months of the year. Rain, when it comes, tends to be a short shower rather than a wet day.
The southeasterly trade winds that blow through the dry season keep the coast comfortable and are the reason this is kite season. In the highlands the nights are genuinely cold. Before dawn on Mount Batur, or in the evening in Munduk and Bedugul, you will want a fleece.
The sea is near its coolest, roughly 26°C around the mainland and much colder in the upwellings off Nusa Penida, where divers often meet water in the low 20s or below. Sunset falls at around 6:10 to 6:20 pm, so plan beach and temple evenings accordingly.
Crowds and prices
August is high season, plain and simple. European school holidays fill Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud and the Nusa islands. Popular villas and hotels often sell out months ahead, and many add high-season surcharges for July and August, so book flights and rooms as early as you can. Day-trip prices for drivers and boats rarely jump much, but availability does.
The crowds are concentrated. Tegallalang, the Lempuyang gate, Kelingking on Nusa Penida and the big beach clubs feel it most. The north and east, including Amed, Sidemen and Pemuteran, stay noticeably calmer. Going early is the single best trick: most viewpoints are quiet before 8 am.
Every visitor also pays the IDR 150,000 (about USD 9) tourist levy, so pay it on the official Love Bali site before you fly.
Independence Day on August 17
Indonesia declared independence on August 17, 1945, and Hari Kemerdekaan is the biggest civic holiday of the year. In 2027 it falls on a Tuesday. Through the first half of August, red-and-white flags and bunting go up on every house, shop and boat, and villages hold lomba, neighborhood games such as sack races, cracker-eating contests and panjat pinang, where teams scramble up a greased areca palm trunk to claim prizes tied at the top.
On the morning of the 17th, the official flag-raising ceremony takes place across the island, with the main provincial event at the Niti Mandala Renon field in Denpasar. Visitors are welcome to watch respectfully from the edges, and in 2026 the hotel association encouraged hotels to hold their own flag ceremonies and games for guests. Government offices and banks close, but shops, restaurants and tourist sites mostly operate as normal. Expect parades and some road closures in towns that morning.
August 15, 2027, is also a national holiday, the Prophet's Birthday, though it passes quietly in Hindu-majority Bali.
Kite season and festivals
Through July and August, the skies over the south fill with kites. Banjar teams build huge traditional designs, from the fish-shaped bebean to the janggan with its long trailing tail, some up to 10 meters wide with tails close to 100 meters. The big competitions are held on the beaches at Padang Galak and Mertasari near Sanur; in 2026 the Bali Kite Festival was held on July 23. Dates depend on the wind and are usually only announced a few weeks ahead, so check locally. Even without a festival, you will see teams flying kites over the rice fields every windy afternoon.
August also brings a cluster of events. In 2026 the Sanur Village Festival ran August 12 to 16, the Ubud Village Jazz Festival took place on August 7 and 8, and the Maybank Marathon Bali was run on August 23. Dates change every year, so check before you go.
Galungan in August 2027
In 2027, Galungan falls on August 11 and Kuningan on August 21. This is the most important recurring festival in Balinese Hinduism, when the ancestors are believed to return home. In the days before, tall penjor bamboo poles go up along every village road, families prepare elaborate offerings and roast pork, and temples fill with people in their best ceremonial dress. It is a beautiful time to be on the island; just be patient with traffic and remember that some local businesses close for a day or two. See our guide to temple etiquette before visiting a ceremony.
What to do in Bali in August
- Dive or snorkel off Nusa Penida. Mantas are present year-round at Manta Point, and August is in the heart of the mola mola season at Crystal Bay. See our guide to manta rays and mola mola.
- Go north for clear water. Menjangan Island and the reefs of Amed and Tulamben are at their calmest in dry-season mornings. Our snorkeling guide has the details.
- Climb Mount Batur. Clear skies give good sunrise odds; leave around 3 or 4 am and bring a warm layer.
- Watch Kecak at Uluwatu. Dry-season sunsets are reliable, but the August crowds are big, so buy tickets early in the day.
- Surf the Bukit. The Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin breaks work well with dry-season swell and offshore winds, mostly for experienced surfers; beginners do better in Kuta or Canggu.
What to pack
Light clothes, a fleece for the hills, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, a rash guard or thin wetsuit for long snorkels, and a sarong for temples. You can leave the rain gear at home. For how August compares with the quieter months, see Bali in September and the best time to visit Bali.
