The short answer: what Nyepi means for you
Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, is the first day of the Saka new year. In 2027 it falls on Monday, March 8. For 24 hours, from 6 a.m. on Nyepi until 6 a.m. the next morning, the entire island shuts down. Ngurah Rai International Airport closes, roads empty, shops and beaches close, and everyone, tourists included, stays inside.
As a visitor you will spend the day in your hotel or villa. You can move around within the property, eat, read, swim where the hotel allows it and sleep, but you cannot go out onto the street. It sounds restrictive. In practice, many people who have experienced it call it the most peaceful day they ever spent in Bali, and the nights either side of it are among the most spectacular on the island's calendar.
The days before: Melasti
Nyepi is not a single day but the quiet center of a sequence of rituals. A few days before, usually three or four, villages hold Melasti. Long processions in white carry sacred temple objects, shrines and effigies to the sea, or to a lake or spring inland, to be purified with holy water.
The beaches during Melasti are an unforgettable sight: thousands of people in white, parasols, gamelan, offerings piled on the sand. Petitenget, Kuta, Sanur and Klotok in Klungkung are among the places where you can watch. Each village chooses its own day, so ask your hotel or driver which processions are planned nearby. In 2027 that means roughly the first week of March. Keep a respectful distance and never walk through a procession.
The eve: ogoh-ogoh night
The day before Nyepi, Sunday, March 7, 2027, is Tawur Kesanga, the great purification of the island's demonic forces. Offerings are made at crossroads at midday, and households drive out spirits with noise, fire and torches in the evening, a ritual known as pengerupukan.
Then come the ogoh-ogoh. Every banjar, or neighborhood association, spends weeks building huge papier-mache and bamboo monsters representing evil spirits, many of them several meters tall and astonishingly detailed. At dusk they are carried through the streets on bamboo frames, spun at every crossroads to confuse evil spirits, accompanied by drums, gamelan and crowds. Traditionally they are burned afterward.
For visitors, this is the night to be out. Denpasar's main parade around Puputan Square draws big crowds, but every village has its own, and a local banjar parade in Ubud, Canggu or Sanur can feel more personal. Arrive early, keep your bag close and expect road closures from late afternoon.
Nyepi day: the rules
On Nyepi, Balinese Hindus observe the Catur Brata Penyepian, four prohibitions:
- Amati Geni: no fire or light, including electricity.
- Amati Karya: no work.
- Amati Lelungan: no travel.
- Amati Lelanguan: no entertainment or pleasure.
Tourists are not expected to fast or meditate, but you are expected to stay on your property, keep noise low and keep lights dim, especially at night. Hotels close curtains, switch off outdoor lighting and often limit pool use, but kitchens keep running for guests. If you are in a villa, stock up on food and water the day before, since almost every shop will be closed. Local patrolmen called pecalang watch the streets and will firmly send anyone who wanders out back indoors.
Exceptions exist for emergencies: hospitals stay open, and ambulances and emergency services can operate.
Airport, ferries and travel
Ngurah Rai International Airport closes for the full 24 hours, with no arrivals or departures. In 2026 the closure ran from 6 a.m. on March 19 to 6 a.m. on March 20, and the same pattern is expected for 2027, from 6 a.m. on March 8 to 6 a.m. on March 9. Check with your airline. Ferry ports, including Gilimanuk and Padangbai, also close, so you cannot slip over to Java, Lombok or Nusa Penida that day.
Plan to arrive at least a day early and leave a day after. Flights around Nyepi fill up and prices rise. In 2027, Eid al-Fitr is also expected around March 9-10, which will make domestic flights and ferries even busier, so book early.
Internet and phone: what happened in past years
Bali first switched off mobile internet for Nyepi in 2018, after religious and community leaders asked the government to make the day truly quiet. The shutdown has been repeated in most years since. In 2025, the government ordered telecommunications operators and broadcasters to suspend services for the 24 hours from 6 a.m. on March 29. In 2026, mobile data, television and radio were suspended from 6 a.m. on March 19 to 6 a.m. on March 20, under a ministerial circular.
Crucially, fixed-line Wi-Fi stayed on in 2026 to support hospitals, emergency services and residents, and hotel Wi-Fi generally kept working. Expect the same for 2027, but do not count on it. Download films, books, maps and music in advance, and tell people at home that you may be offline.
The day after: Ngembak Geni
On Tuesday, March 9, 2027, Bali wakes up. Ngembak Geni is a day of forgiveness, when families visit relatives and neighbors to ask for and offer pardon. Shops and warungs reopen gradually, and the airport resumes flights from 6 a.m.
In the Denpasar village of Sesetan, young unmarried locals take part in omed-omedan, a lively tradition in which they are pulled together for a kiss while being doused with water. It draws big crowds and is one of the more unusual festivals in Bali.
How to make the most of it
Choose your accommodation with Nyepi in mind: a place with a garden, a pool you can use and a good kitchen makes the day feel like a retreat. Ask in advance whether the hotel offers a Nyepi package with meals included. Bring a book, a journal or a deck of cards. And if the sky is clear that night, step out onto your terrace with the lights off. With the whole island dark, the stars over Bali are something you will remember for a very long time.
