The short answer
Bali is one of the easiest places in the world to practice yoga, whether you want a single class or a month-long training. Ubud is the spiritual center, with large, long-running studios such as The Yoga Barn and Radiantly Alive. Canggu is the beach-town alternative, with studios like The Practice and Samadi Bali close to the surf. A drop-in class in 2026 typically costs around IDR 120,000 to 185,000 (about USD 7 to 11), multi-day retreats start from around USD 500 and climb into the thousands, and a 200-hour yoga teacher training usually runs about USD 1,100 to 3,200 for three to four weeks.
You do not need to book a retreat to have a retreat-like stay. Many travelers simply base themselves in Ubud for a week, take a morning class every day and plan everything else around it.
Ubud: the heart of yoga in Bali
Ubud has been drawing yogis for decades, and the town is built around it: studios, vegetarian cafes, healers and meditation halls sit between the rice fields and the river gorges.
- The Yoga Barn, Pengosekan: The best-known studio in Bali, with several open-air shalas, a packed daily timetable from gentle hatha to vinyasa, yin and ecstatic dance, plus sound healing and workshops. A drop-in is listed at around IDR 165,000. It is busy and social; come early for popular classes.
- Radiantly Alive, central Ubud: A long-established studio in the center of town with a full daily schedule and its own 200-hour teacher trainings, scheduled through 2027 at around IDR 40 to 49 million (about USD 2,250 to 2,750), accommodation not included. Drop-ins are listed at around IDR 165,000.
- Alchemy Yoga and Meditation Center, Sayan, and Ubud Yoga House: Smaller and calmer options, at around IDR 165,000 and 185,000 respectively.
Ubud is cooler than the coast, especially in the mornings, and quieter at night, which is part of its appeal. For more on where to stay, see our Where to stay in Bali guide.
Canggu and the coast
If you want yoga in the morning and the beach in the afternoon, look at Canggu and Pererenan.
- The Practice, Canggu: A serious, teaching-focused studio in a beautiful wooden shala, known for traditional hatha, meditation and its trainings. A drop-in is around IDR 150,000.
- Samadi Bali, Echo Beach: A relaxed studio with an organic garden cafe and a well-known Sunday market, about IDR 155,000 a class.
- The Path Yoga Center, Pererenan: Popular with long-stayers and teacher-training students, around IDR 165,000.
Elsewhere on the coast, Uluwatu, Seminyak and Sanur all have good studios, with Sanur generally cheaper at around IDR 90,000 to 140,000 per class. Studio prices change, and most offer five- or ten-class passes and monthly memberships that bring the per-class cost down considerably.
Yoga retreats: what they cost
A retreat bundles accommodation, daily classes, healthy meals and usually some extras like massage, a cooking class or a temple visit. Prices vary hugely:
- Short retreats, 3 to 5 days: from around USD 500 for a simple program in a guesthouse setting.
- One-week retreats in mid-range resorts: commonly around USD 1,000 to 2,500 including meals and shared or private rooms.
- Luxury wellness retreats: several thousand USD per week, particularly at high-end resorts around Ubud.
As an example from a major booking site, an 8-day breathwork and Ayurveda retreat in Ubud is listed at around USD 2,458 for 7 nights. Always check whether airport transfers, single rooms and the tourist levy are included.
How to choose
- Style: Decide whether you want dynamic vinyasa, slow hatha and yin, meditation, or a mix. Ask for a sample schedule.
- Group size: Smaller groups mean more personal attention. Ask for the maximum number of participants.
- Teachers: Look up the lead teachers and their experience, not just the venue photos.
- Balance: Some retreats are strict, with early starts, silence or no alcohol; others are basically holidays with yoga. Make sure the program matches what you want.
- Location: Ubud for jungle and culture, the coast for surf and sunsets, Sidemen or the north for real quiet.
- Reviews: Read recent ones, ideally from people who traveled solo if you are going alone.
Yoga teacher training basics
Bali is one of the world's busiest places for yoga teacher training. Most courses follow the Yoga Alliance format: a 200-hour foundation course over roughly 3 to 4 weeks, then 300-hour advanced training for experienced teachers. Recent listings for 200-hour trainings in Bali range from about USD 1,120 to 3,150, depending on accommodation, group size and the school. Expect six days a week of practice, anatomy, philosophy and teaching practicum, often from early morning into the evening.
Choose a school with experienced lead trainers, a clear daily schedule, a small cohort, and genuine Yoga Alliance registration if you want to teach internationally.
A note on visas and teaching
You can attend classes, retreats and trainings on a tourist visa. What you cannot do is work. Teaching yoga in Bali, whether paid or in exchange for free accommodation, counts as work, and a Visa on Arrival or C1 tourist visa does not allow it. Foreigners have been fined and deported for working without the right permit. If you plan to stay longer and work remotely, read our guide to the Bali digital nomad visa, and note that teaching local classes requires proper work authorization.
Practical tips
- Bring or rent a mat: Most studios provide mats; a travel mat or towel is useful for hygiene.
- Arrive early: Popular classes at the big studios can fill up, especially in July and August.
- Respect the space: Many shalas are built near temples. Dress modestly on the way and follow local etiquette.
- Combine it: A morning class pairs perfectly with the Campuhan Ridge walk in Ubud or a surf in Canggu.
