Bali in May: Dry Days, Shoulder-Season Prices and Saraswati

May may be the sweetest month on the Balinese calendar: the rains have gone, the rice fields are still green and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. Here is how to plan it.

Is May a good time to visit Bali?

May is one of the best months of the year to visit Bali, and many people who live here would put it at the very top. The dry season has properly arrived, with long sunny days and only the occasional shower, but the July and August crowds are still weeks away and prices sit at shoulder-season levels. The island is still green from the rains, the sea is warm and calm, and in 2027 the month ends with Saraswati, the Balinese day of knowledge, and the Ubud Food Festival.

The only dates to watch are a pair of Indonesian long weekends, which bring domestic travelers in the first and third weeks of the month.

The weather: sunshine and fresh green

Long-term averages put May at around 30 to 31°C by day and 23 to 24°C at night on the coast, with roughly 100 mm of rain on about seven days. Sunshine averages around ten hours a day, among the most of the year. When it does rain, it is usually a short shower that clears within the hour.

Humidity drops noticeably compared with April, and the trade winds keep evenings pleasant. Nights in the highlands around Kintamani, Bedugul and Munduk turn cool, so bring a warm layer if you plan to stay up there or hike at dawn. The sea is around 28°C, still warm enough for long swims and dives without a thick wetsuit.

Crowds and prices

May is shoulder season. European summer holidays have not started, Australian schools are in term, and hotels and villas price accordingly. You will find good availability almost everywhere and better rates than in June, July or August.

Indonesia's holiday calendar adds two busy stretches in 2027:

  • Ascension Day on Thursday, May 6, with collective leave on Friday, May 7, creating a four-day weekend. International Workers' Day falls on Saturday, May 1.
  • Eid al-Adha on Monday, May 17, and Vesak on Thursday, May 20, with collective leave on May 18 and 19. Together with the weekend before, that gives many Indonesians almost a week off from May 15 to 20.

Expect Jakarta and Surabaya visitors in Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua and the big attractions on those dates, and higher domestic airfares. The rest of the month is relaxed.

Ceremonies and events in May 2027

May 2027 is rich in Balinese holy days:

  • Tumpek Wayang, Saturday, May 8: a day honoring the shadow puppets of the wayang kulit. Children born in the week of Wayang may receive a special purification ceremony, often accompanied by a puppet performance.
  • Saraswati, Saturday, May 29: the day of Dewi Saraswati, goddess of knowledge and learning. Books and palm-leaf manuscripts receive offerings, students pray in school uniforms, and temples such as Pura Taman Saraswati in central Ubud fill with offerings.
  • Banyu Pinaruh, Sunday, May 30: the morning after Saraswati, families bathe in the sea or at holy springs at dawn. Beaches like Sanur are busy with people in ceremonial dress as the sun comes up.
  • Pagerwesi follows on Wednesday, June 2, so the end of May flows straight into another important holy day.

The Ubud Food Festival usually takes place in late May or early June. The 2026 edition ran from May 28 to 31, with a free food market and ticketed dinners at Ubud restaurants; check the festival's website for the 2027 dates.

What to do in Bali in May

  • Snorkel or dive with manta rays. Reef mantas are present year-round off Nusa Penida, and researchers have found that the mating season at Manta Point peaks in May, when adults gather for courtship displays. Calm seas make the crossing reliable. See our guide to manta rays and mola mola.
  • Climb a volcano. Clear mornings make May excellent for the Mount Batur sunrise trek, and once the Besakih ceremonies of March and April are over, the climbing season on Mount Agung usually resumes. Check the current status first.
  • Explore the north. The waterfalls around Munduk still run strongly after the rains, the clove and coffee hills are lush, and the snorkeling at Menjangan Island is calm and clear.
  • Surf the Bukit. The southwest swells and offshore trade winds make Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula breaks a serious option from May, for experienced surfers. Beginners still do best at Kuta or Batu Bolong in Canggu.
  • See the rice terraces green. Jatiluwih and the Sidemen Valley are lush, and dry roads make the drive easier than in the wet season.

Where to base yourself

Almost anywhere works in May. Ubud is ideal at the end of the month for Saraswati and the food festival. Uluwatu and Pererenan suit surfers and sunset lovers, and Sanur makes a calm base for Nusa Penida trips. May is also a fine month for a few nights in Munduk or Pemuteran before the dry-season crowds discover the north. If you travel over the mid-May long weekend, book ahead in the south.

What to pack for May

  • Light summer clothes, plus a fleece for highland nights and the Batur summit.
  • A compact umbrella or rain shell for the odd shower.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
  • Trail shoes for volcanoes and waterfalls.
  • A sarong and sash, ideally a little smarter, if you hope to see Saraswati or Banyu Pinaruh celebrations.
