Health & Safety Precautions

Food and water, traffic, wildlife, the ocean and the scams to know about, in one place

Bali is a safe and easygoing island, and almost everything that goes wrong for visitors falls into a few familiar categories: an upset stomach, a scooter accident, a strong current, an animal bite or a tourist scam. Knowing them in advance takes most of the risk out of a trip.

Food and water come first. Drink bottled or refilled filtered water, never tap water, and use it to brush your teeth if your stomach is sensitive. Busy warungs with a quick turnover of fresh food are usually safer than quiet ones. The stomach upset known as Bali belly is common: rest, drink plenty of oral rehydration salts, and see a clinic if it lasts more than a few days, if you have a high fever or if you see blood. Avoid homemade arak and cheap mystery cocktails, as methanol poisoning has hurt and killed visitors.

Traffic is the biggest danger on the island. Roads are narrow and crowded, and scooter accidents injure visitors every day. Only ride if you are experienced, hold a valid license for motorbikes and wear a helmet; otherwise use a driver, Gojek or Grab. On foot, watch for open drains and broken pavements, especially at night.

Wildlife needs respect. Bali has rabies, so do not touch or feed monkeys, stray dogs or cats, and get to a clinic straight away for rabies treatment if you are bitten or scratched. In temples and monkey forests, keep sunglasses, phones and food out of reach. Mosquitoes can carry dengue fever, so use repellent, especially in the rainy season. In the sea, watch for jellyfish and sea urchins, and never touch coral.

The ocean is the second big risk. Powerful rip currents form along many beaches on the west and south coasts. Swim between the red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards patrol, respect red flags, and never swim alone or after drinking.

Finally, the scams. The best known are money changers with rates that look too good, sleight of hand while counting and short-changing; use licensed changers or bank ATMs instead. Agree taxi prices before you get in, or use an app. Be wary of overly friendly offers, fake tour sellers and anyone who insists on taking you to a particular shop. For emergencies, call 112, and keep your insurer's 24-hour number with you.
