The short answer
Bali is the easiest international trip most Australians can take. Nonstop flights to Denpasar (DPS) leave from Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, plus a growing list of smaller airports. Flying time runs from about 2.5 hours out of Darwin to around 6.5 hours from Sydney. Jetstar flies the most routes, Virgin Australia covers the east coast, Qantas and Garuda Indonesia fly daily from Sydney and Melbourne, and Perth has the widest choice of low-cost carriers. Sale fares can drop to around AUD 250 return from Perth and roughly AUD 400 to 500 from the east coast, while school holidays and Christmas can push the same seat past AUD 1,000.
Who flies where
Routes change every season, so treat this as a snapshot of 2026 schedules and check the airline before you plan around a specific flight.
- Perth: the busiest Bali route in Australia, with Jetstar, Indonesia AirAsia, Batik Air, Batik Air Malaysia and TransNusa all flying nonstop, many of them several times a day. Around 3.5 to 4 hours.
- Darwin: Jetstar and Indonesia AirAsia. About 2.5 hours, which makes Bali closer to Darwin than Sydney is.
- Adelaide: Jetstar, with daily flights and extra services several days a week, and Indonesia AirAsia. Virgin Australia has dropped Adelaide. Around 5 hours.
- Melbourne: the most competitive east-coast route, with Jetstar (several flights a day), Virgin Australia, Qantas, Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air Malaysia and TransNusa, and AirAsia added in 2026. Jetstar also flies from Avalon. Around 6 to 6.5 hours.
- Sydney: Jetstar twice daily, plus daily Qantas, Virgin Australia, Garuda Indonesia and Batik Air Malaysia flights. Around 6.5 hours.
- Brisbane: Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Batik Air Malaysia. About 6 hours.
- Gold Coast: Jetstar and Virgin Australia. About 6 hours.
Jetstar also flies to Bali from Cairns, the Sunshine Coast and Newcastle, and Virgin Australia began Canberra flights in mid-2026. Batik Air Malaysia's Australian flights stop in Bali on their way to Kuala Lumpur, which is why fares on them can be surprisingly low.
Low-cost or full-service
The headline price rarely tells the whole story. Jetstar, AirAsia and other low-cost fares are seat-only: on Jetstar that means carry-on bags up to 7 kg, with checked bags, meals and seat selection extra. On a two-week trip with a surfboard or a family's worth of luggage, those extras add up quickly.
Qantas and Garuda Indonesia include a checked bag, meals and drinks in economy, and both fly daily from Sydney and Melbourne. TransNusa's base fare out of Perth includes 15 kg of checked baggage. Virgin Australia sells several fare types with different inclusions, so check what yours covers. The fair comparison is always the total price for your bags, your seats and your dates.
What flights cost, and the cheapest months
Bali fares follow Australian school holidays more than Balinese weather. In October 2026 the cheapest returns listed by fare trackers were roughly:
- Perth: from about AUD 240
- Darwin: from about AUD 370
- Melbourne: from about AUD 380
- Adelaide: from about AUD 410
- Brisbane and Sydney: from about AUD 460 to 470
- Gold Coast: from about AUD 510
Those are sale prices with no checked bags. In practice, expect around AUD 450 to 650 return from the east coast in shoulder season and AUD 850 to 1,200 or more during peak periods, with Perth and Darwin well below that.
The cheapest months are usually February and March, plus October and November, outside the school holidays. The most expensive periods are the June to July winter school holidays, the September to October break, and especially Christmas to mid-January. Pick a midweek departure and look a day or two either side of your preferred dates; on busy routes like Perth and Melbourne the difference can be large.
When to book
For ordinary dates, booking roughly six weeks to four months ahead and watching for airline sales usually lands a good fare. For July, Christmas and New Year, book as early as you can, ideally six months or more out, because the cheap seats on the popular evening departures go first. Set fare alerts for your route and be ready to move fast when Jetstar or Virgin run a sale.
One date to avoid: Bali's airport closes for 24 hours on Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence, which falls on Monday, March 8, 2027. No flights land or depart that day, so make sure your arrival and departure sit either side of it.
Baggage and arrival tips
- Pack to the limit you paid for. Low-cost carriers weigh carry-on bags at the gate, and excess fees at the airport cost more than adding a bag online.
- Surfboards and bikes usually count as sports equipment with their own fees. Book them in advance; space can be limited on smaller aircraft.
- Sort your visa online. Australians need a Visa on Arrival; buying the e-VOA before you fly speeds up immigration. Pay Bali's tourist levy online too. Our visa and arrival guide covers both.
- Mind the arrival time. Many Australian flights land in the late afternoon or evening, right in Bali's worst traffic. If you are staying in Ubud or Uluwatu, a pre-booked driver is worth it.
- Check your travel insurance covers scooters and the activities you plan, before you fly.
Which city gets the best deal
Perth wins on price and choice, with so many daily flights that last-minute deals are common. Darwin is the shortest hop in the country. On the east coast, Melbourne usually has the most competition and the best fares, while Sydney has the widest choice of full-service airlines. Brisbane and Gold Coast travelers should compare both airports, as one is often noticeably cheaper on the same day. Once you land, our airport guide walks you through the arrivals hall and the drive to your hotel.
