The short answer
Choose the Maldives if your dream is an overwater villa, a private beach, turquoise lagoons and reef snorkeling straight from your deck, and you are happy to stay on one small island and pay for it. Choose Bali if you want romance plus variety: cliff-top villas, rice terraces, temples, spas, great restaurants and day trips, for a fraction of the price. For a one-week honeymoon on a mid-range budget, Bali usually gives more. For pure, uninterrupted beach seclusion, nothing beats the Maldives.
Cost
This is the biggest difference.
Maldives: most visitors stay at private-island resorts, and prices reflect it. As a rough 2026 guide, guesthouses on local islands start around US$60 to $130 a night, mid-range resorts around US$200 to $400, and overwater villas typically from around US$500 to $1,000 or more a night, with top-tier resorts well beyond that. Then add:
- Transfers: roughly US$100 to $490 per person return by speedboat, and US$400 to $820 by seaplane.
- Taxes: a 17 percent tourism goods and services tax (raised from 16 percent in July 2025), usually a 10 percent service charge, and a green tax of US$12 per person per night at resorts (US$6 at guesthouses).
- Meals: you eat at your resort, so a half-board or all-inclusive plan is often worth it.
A week for two in a water villa easily runs US$8,000 to $15,000 before flights.
Bali: a romantic private pool villa costs around US$100 to $300 a night, and true luxury resorts in Uluwatu, Nusa Dua or Ubud start around US$400 to $800. A warung lunch costs under US$3, a dinner for two at a good restaurant maybe US$40 to $80, and a full-day private driver around US$35 to $65. Entry costs are a Visa on Arrival plus Bali's IDR 150,000 (about US$8) tourist levy. A beautiful week for two can cost US$2,500 to $5,000 on the ground.
Overwater villas vs culture
The Maldives sells one thing perfectly: privacy in a postcard. Many resorts occupy their own island, the lagoons are clearer than anything in Bali, and the days follow the sun from breakfast to snorkel to sunset dinner. The trade-off is that there is little beyond the resort; local culture is mostly something you visit on an excursion.
Bali has no true overwater villas, but it has something the Maldives cannot offer: a living Hindu culture. You can watch the sunset Kecak at Uluwatu Temple, take a purification blessing at Tirta Empul, wander Jatiluwih's rice terraces and dine on Jimbaran Bay with your feet in the sand. Romance in Bali comes from infinity pools over jungle gorges and clifftops, not lagoons.
Activities
Maldives: snorkeling and diving are world class, with manta rays, reef sharks, turtles and, in season, whale sharks in South Ari Atoll. Add sandbank picnics, sunset dolphin cruises, spa days and underwater restaurants. It is perfect for rest, less so for couples who get restless after three days.
Bali: you could fill two weeks. Hike Mount Batur at sunrise, take a surf lesson, swim under Sekumpul, snorkel with mantas off Nusa Penida, join a cooking class, or spend a day in a spa. The beaches are good rather than flawless; see our swimming beaches guide.
Flights and getting there
Maldives: you land at Velana International Airport in Malé, then transfer to your resort by speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so late arrivals may need a night near the airport. From Europe there are direct flights or one-stop connections via the Gulf; from the US, expect at least one stop. Entry is simple: a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, a confirmed resort booking and return ticket, and the IMUGA traveler declaration filed online within 96 hours before arrival.
Bali: Ngurah Rai International Airport is a short drive from most resorts. It is an easy hop from Australia (around 3.5 to 6.5 hours) and Asia, but from Europe or North America you need at least one connection and around 17 to 24 hours of travel. Our visa and arrival guide covers the Visa on Arrival and levy.
Best time to go
Maldives: the drier northeast monsoon runs roughly December to April, with the calmest seas and highest prices, especially mid-December to mid-January and February to March. May to November brings more rain and wind but rates can fall dramatically; diving can still be excellent.
Bali: the dry season runs April to October. May, June and September are the sweet spot, with sunny days and fewer crowds than July and August. Our guide to the best time to visit Bali goes month by month.
The seasons complement each other: if your dates fall in the European winter, the Maldives is at its best; for a summer wedding, Bali is.
Can you do both?
Yes, and many honeymooners do: a week of exploring in Bali, then four or five nights of doing nothing in the Maldives. There is no direct flight between them, so you usually connect through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, which makes for a long travel day. Do Bali first and finish in the Maldives to rest.
Which should you choose?
- Ultimate seclusion, budget no object: Maldives.
- Variety, culture and food: Bali.
- Budget under around US$5,000 for two: Bali, by a wide margin.
- Divers and snorkelers: Maldives, though Nusa Penida's mantas are a strong runner-up.
- Restless couples: Bali.
- Ten days or more: both, with Bali first.

Frequently asked
Is Bali cheaper than the Maldives?
Much cheaper. A luxury villa in Bali often costs less than a mid-range Maldives water villa, and food, transport and activities in Bali cost a fraction of resort prices.
Does Bali have overwater villas?
Not in the Maldives sense. Bali's romantic stays are private pool villas and cliff-top or jungle resorts, mainly in Uluwatu, Nusa Dua and Ubud.
Can you combine Bali and the Maldives?
Yes. There are no direct flights, so most couples connect through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Explore Bali first and finish with a few lazy days in the Maldives.
What is the best month for a Maldives or Bali honeymoon?
December to April is best for the Maldives; May, June and September are ideal for Bali.
