Bali Visa for US Citizens 2026: e-VOA, Cost and Entry Rules

Americans can get a Bali visa online in minutes, but a short passport or a missing onward ticket can still end a trip at the check-in desk. Here is everything a US traveler needs, checked against official Indonesian government sources.

The short answer

Yes, US citizens need a visa for Bali, but it is one of the easiest visas in the world to get. Americans are eligible for Indonesia's Visa on Arrival (VoA), which you can buy online in advance as an e-VOA at the official portal, evisa.imigrasi.go.id, or at a counter after you land. The official fee listed by Indonesian immigration is IDR 500,000 (about US$28) for a stay of up to 30 days, extendable once for another 30.

On top of the visa you will need a passport valid for at least six months, a return or onward ticket, the IDR 150,000 Bali tourist levy and the digital All Indonesia arrival declaration. Sort all four at home and your arrival at Ngurah Rai airport becomes a formality. For the general version of this guide, see our Bali visa and arrival guide.

e-VOA or Visa on Arrival at the airport

The visa is the same either way: a single-entry visitor visa for tourism, short business meetings or transit. The difference is where you queue.

  • e-VOA (recommended): apply on evisa.imigrasi.go.id before you fly. You create an account, upload a scan of your passport's photo page and a passport-style photo, and pay by Visa, Mastercard or JCB credit card. The official site recommends applying at least 48 hours before departure. Once approved, download the visa and keep a copy on your phone and on paper. An issued e-VOA is valid for 90 days, meaning you can enter on any date in that window.
  • VoA on arrival: pay at the counter in the arrivals hall at Bali's airport, in rupiah or US dollars, then join the immigration line. It works, but after a 20-plus-hour journey from the US mainland, the extra queue can be slow at peak hours.

Every traveler needs a separate visa, including infants and children, even if they are listed in a parent's passport.

How much it costs, and a fee change to watch

The fee shown on the official e-visa portal and by Indonesian immigration offices is IDR 500,000, and the extension costs the same. Your card issuer may add a foreign transaction fee.

Visa fees are set by government regulation and can be revised at short notice, so check the official site before you go, and pay only on evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Lookalike websites, often ranking high in Google, charge inflated "processing fees" for the very same visa.

How long you can stay and how to extend

The VoA allows up to 30 days from your arrival date. You can extend it once for another 30 days, a maximum of 60 days in total.

An e-VOA can be extended online on evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The window opens 14 days before your permit expires and closes one day before. After paying, you are scheduled for a photo appointment at the immigration office responsible for the address you enter, typically the next working day. Dress for it: immigration asks for covered knees and shoulders and closed shoes, not flip-flops. You need a valid ticket out of Indonesia to extend.

Overstaying costs IDR 1,000,000 per day (about US$55) and can lead to detention, deportation or a travel ban. If you want longer than 60 days, consider the C1 tourist visa: it allows 60 days initially and can be extended up to a total of 180 days, but it must be applied for online before you arrive and requires a bank statement showing at least US$2,000.

Passport and onward ticket

  • Passport validity: at least six months from your arrival date. Airlines can refuse boarding if you fall short, so check now rather than at check-in.
  • Onward ticket: a return flight or onward ticket out of Indonesia is a requirement for the VoA, and both airlines and immigration officers can ask to see it. A one-way ticket to Bali without proof of departure is the most common way Americans get stuck at check-in.

The Bali tourist levy

Bali's provincial government charges every international tourist a one-time levy of IDR 150,000 (about US$8) per trip. It is separate from your visa and funds the protection of Balinese culture and the environment.

Pay it before you fly at the official site, lovebali.baliprov.go.id, or in the Love Bali app, using a credit card, bank transfer or other cashless method. You receive a voucher with a QR code by email. You can also pay at counters in Bali's airport and seaports. Keep the voucher on your phone, as officials can ask to see it. Our Bali tourist tax guide explains who is exempt and how to avoid fake payment sites.

All Indonesia arrival declaration

Bali's airport has required it since September 1, 2025, and today every international arrival at Indonesian airports completes the All Indonesia declaration. It combines the immigration, customs, health and quarantine questions in one digital form, so you no longer fill in a separate customs e-CD. Complete it at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the All Indonesia app, starting up to three days before you arrive, and keep the QR code ready for the officers.

Customs basics for Americans

  • Personal goods: items for personal use worth up to US$500 per person are exempt from duty.
  • Alcohol and tobacco: up to 1 liter of alcohol (age 21 and over) and up to 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars or 100 grams of tobacco (age 18 and over).
  • Cash: carrying IDR 100 million (about US$5,500) or more, or the equivalent in dollars, must be declared. Failing to do so brings a penalty of 10 percent of the amount.
  • Medication: Indonesia's drug laws are severe. Carry prescriptions in original packaging with your doctor's letter, and check with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Washington, DC before packing any controlled medication.

Your pre-flight checklist

  • Passport valid for six months or more
  • e-VOA approved, downloaded and saved
  • Return or onward ticket printed or on your phone
  • Love Bali levy voucher in your inbox
  • All Indonesia QR code, completed within three days of arrival
  • Address of your first night's stay

Do that, and the walk from the plane to the curb, where your driver waits with a name sign, can take well under an hour.
