Bali in October: Weather, Crowds, Ceremonies and What to Pack

October is Bali's dry season taking its final bow: hot, mostly sunny days, warm water and quieter streets once the school holidays end. Here is what the month is really like, and how to make the most of it.

Is October a good time to visit Bali?

Yes. October is the last full month of Bali's dry season, and for many travelers it is one of the best-value months of the year. You still get long sunny days, warm sea and good conditions for hiking and boat trips, but the Australian school holidays end in the first or second week, prices ease, and the island feels noticeably calmer than in July or August. The trade-off is heat and humidity: October is when the air starts to thicken before the rains, and the odd afternoon shower creeps in toward the end of the month.

If your dates are flexible, aim for the middle two weeks. You avoid the school-holiday tail at the start and the first real storms that sometimes arrive in the last days of the month.

The weather: the dry season's last stretch

Long-term averages for the airport station near Kuta put October at around 31°C by day and 25°C at night, with roughly 50 mm of rain falling on five or six days. Compare that with about 15 mm in August and well over 100 mm in November, and you can see October for what it is: a transition month that is still mostly dry.

What changes is the feel. The cooler, breezy evenings of July and August give way to sticky afternoons, the UV index sits at extreme levels, and clouds often build over the mountains after lunch. When rain does come, it tends to be a short, heavy burst in the late afternoon or evening rather than a washed-out day. Indonesia's weather agency, BMKG, expected the 2026 rainy season to begin gradually in October and build through November, which matches what people who live here see most years.

The highlands are a different climate. In Ubud nights are a few degrees cooler than on the coast, and around Kintamani and the summit of Mount Batur the pre-dawn air can be genuinely cold, so bring a warm layer if you plan a sunrise trek.

Crowds and prices

October has two halves. The first week or two overlaps with Australian spring school holidays. In 2026 they ran until October 4 in Victoria, October 9 in New South Wales, October 11 in Western Australia and South Australia, and October 18 in Tasmania, and families from Perth in particular fill Seminyak, Kuta, Nusa Dua and Sanur. Expect similar timing in 2027, but check the state calendars before you book.

Once those holidays end, Bali slides into shoulder season. Villa and hotel rates usually soften, last-minute deals reappear, and you can often walk into popular restaurants in Canggu or Uluwatu without a booking. Popular sights such as Tegallalang, Tirta Empul and Kelingking are never empty, but the queues at dawn are shorter than in midsummer.

One exception is Ubud during its literary festival week, when guesthouses in the center book up early.

Ceremonies and events in October

There is no Galungan or Nyepi in October, but the Balinese calendar is never quiet. Dates that fall in or around October:

  • Tumpek Wayang, Saturday, October 10, 2026: a day honoring the wayang shadow puppets and the performing arts, when puppeteers make offerings to their puppets and performances are held in some villages.
  • Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, October 21 to 25, 2026: one of Southeast Asia's best-known literary festivals brings authors, talks, readings and evening events to venues across Ubud. It usually returns in October; 2027 dates are not yet confirmed.
  • Saraswati, Saturday, October 31, 2026: the day of Dewi Saraswati, goddess of knowledge and learning. Schoolchildren in white and gold bring offerings to temples, and books and manuscripts are blessed. The next morning, Banyu Pinaruh, families bathe in the sea or at holy springs at dawn.
  • Tumpek Kandang, Saturday, October 30, 2027: if you are planning a year ahead, this is the day farm animals and pets receive blessings and offerings.

On top of these, temple anniversaries called odalan happen somewhere almost every day. If a procession blocks your road, pull over and enjoy it.

What to do in Bali in October

October rewards travelers who want the classic dry-season experiences without the summer crowds.

  • Hike Mount Batur at sunrise. Clear mornings are still common. Expect a start between 2 and 4 a.m., an entry permit of around IDR 100,000, and shared all-in tours of around IDR 500,000 (US$28); a local guide is effectively required. Our honest take on the Batur trek covers the details.
  • Cross to Nusa Penida. Seas are usually manageable in the morning. A night on the island beats a rushed day trip, and divers have an outside chance of a late-season mola mola at Crystal Bay, although August and September are better odds.
  • Surf the Bukit. The dry-season swell is still working at Uluwatu and the reefs around Padang Padang and Bingin, with mostly offshore mornings.
  • Head east before the rain. Sidemen's rice valley, the water palace at Tirta Gangga and the snorkeling off Amed are at their easiest to reach while roads are dry.
  • Book a festival evening in Ubud. Even if you skip the main program, the festival's free events and the town's nightly dance performances make a good counterweight to beach days.

One caveat: by the end of a long dry season some waterfalls run thinner than in the photos, and rice terraces may be freshly harvested rather than glowing green. Ask your driver what is looking good that week.

What to pack for October

Pack for heat first, then for a little rain.

  • Light, breathable clothes in cotton or linen, plus a sarong and sash for temple visits, or rent one at the gate.
  • High-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses; the midday sun is fierce.
  • A light rain jacket or compact umbrella for the last two weeks.
  • A fleece or warm layer and proper shoes for Batur or the highlands.
  • Insect repellent, especially in the evenings as the first rains arrive.

Our full packing list covers the rest. If you are still choosing between months, our month-by-month guide shows how October compares with the rest of the year.
