Is March a good time to visit Bali?
March is a rewarding month to visit Bali, especially in 2027, but it needs more planning than any other month. The weather is still wet early on and easing by the end, prices are low, and the island is at its most spectacular culturally: Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls on Monday, March 8, 2027, with the giant ogoh-ogoh parades the night before. The catch is that the airport closes for 24 hours on Nyepi, and Eid al-Fitr follows two days later, so the second week of March is the busiest, most complicated travel window of the spring.
If you want Nyepi, arrive by March 6 and stay until at least March 10. If you want an easy, quiet trip, come in the second half of the month.
The weather: the wet season winds down
Long-term averages put March at around 31°C by day and 24°C at night on the coast, with roughly 220 to 230 mm of rain on 16 or 17 days. That is still a wet month, but the pattern changes as it goes on. Early March feels much like February, with heavy afternoon storms. By the last week, dry spells stretch over several days and the air begins to lose its heaviness.
March is also one of the most humid months, and the sea stays at its warmest, around 29°C. Winds are shifting between seasons, so surf and boat conditions can change from day to day. The east coast still tends to have cleaner waves, and the Nusa Penida crossing is usually manageable, though not always smooth.
Nyepi, ogoh-ogoh and Melasti in 2027
The Nyepi sequence is the reason many people choose March.
- Melasti, roughly the first week of March: villages carry sacred temple objects to the sea, a lake or a spring for purification, in long processions dressed in white. Each village picks its own day, so ask locally. Beaches such as Petitenget and Sanur are good places to watch from a respectful distance.
- Ogoh-ogoh night, Sunday, March 7: every banjar parades its huge papier-mache demon through the streets at dusk, with drums, torches and crowds. Expect road closures from late afternoon.
- Nyepi, Monday, March 8: from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. on March 9 the whole island stops. No one, tourists included, may leave their accommodation, and Ngurah Rai International Airport is expected to close for the full 24 hours, as it does every year. Ferry ports close too. Check with your airline.
On Nyepi itself you stay in your hotel or villa with lights low and noise down. Stock up on food the day before if you are self-catering. Our full Nyepi guide covers the rules, internet and what hotels offer.
Eid al-Fitr and the rest of the month
Ramadan, which begins in early February, ends right after Nyepi. The official 2027 holiday calendar sets Eid al-Fitr on March 10 and 11, with collective leave on March 9, 12 and 15. Many people who work in Bali's hotels, restaurants and transport come from Java and Lombok and travel home for Eid, while domestic tourists fly in. In practice that means:
- Flights and the Gilimanuk ferry to Java are very busy and expensive around March 9 to 15.
- Some warungs, laundries and small businesses close for a few days, and drivers can be harder to book.
- Southern tourist areas fill with Indonesian families over the long weekend.
Later in the month, Good Friday falls on March 26, 2027, and Easter on March 28. Australian autumn school holidays begin around March 26 in Victoria and Queensland, so expect more families in Kuta, Nusa Dua and Sanur over Easter.
Ceremonies at Besakih
After Nyepi comes Purnama Kedasa, the full moon of the tenth Balinese month, which in 2027 falls in the last week of March. It marks the start of Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh, the great annual ceremony at Besakih, the mother temple on the slopes of Mount Agung. In 2026 it lasted around three weeks, with tourists limited to the outer Bencingah Agung area and climbing on Mount Agung closed. Expect a similar arrangement from late March into April 2027, and check before planning a visit or a climb. Watching thousands of pilgrims in white climbing the temple terraces is unforgettable, but give processions room.
What to do in Bali in March
- Spend Nyepi properly. Treat the day as a rest day: read, swim if your hotel allows it, and step outside after dark to see a sky with almost no light pollution.
- Join an ogoh-ogoh parade. Denpasar's parade around Puputan Square is the biggest, but a village parade in Ubud, Canggu or Sanur often feels more personal.
- Walk the rice fields. Terraces around Ubud and Tegallalang are lush and green, and the Campuhan Ridge walk is best in the cooler early morning.
- Go diving or snorkeling on calm days. Sea temperatures near 29°C make long dives comfortable, and the reefs at Amed and off Nusa Penida are good whenever the sea settles.
- Eat well. The low season is a good time to book tables at Ubud and Canggu restaurants that are full in July.
Where to base yourself
For Nyepi, choose a hotel or villa with food on site, a pool and a garden, since you will not leave it for 24 hours. A resort in Sanur, Nusa Dua or Ubud is the easiest option. Sanur and Ubud both have excellent local ogoh-ogoh parades the night before. Outside the Nyepi week, Ubud is the best base for culture and rice fields, and Sanur for calm seas and easy boat access to Nusa Penida.
What to pack for March
- A light rain jacket or umbrella, and quick-dry clothing.
- White or light clothing if you hope to watch Melasti, plus a sarong and sash for temples.
- Snacks, books and downloaded films for Nyepi; internet may be restricted on the day.
- Insect repellent and reef-safe sunscreen.
- Sandals with grip for slippery temple steps.
