Is July a good time to visit Bali?

July has some of the best weather of the year in Bali, and it is also one of the busiest and most expensive months. Days are dry and sunny, nights are the coolest of the year and the sea is clear, so it is perfect for beaches, hiking, diving and surfing. The price is crowds: Australian winter school holidays fill the first half of the month, European summer holidays the second, and Indonesian families are on holiday too. Flights and villas cost more, and traffic in the south can be slow.

July is a great choice if you book early and choose your base carefully. If you can only travel in summer and want fewer people, aim for the first days of the month or head north and east.

The weather: dry, sunny and cool at night

Long-term averages put July at around 29°C by day and 22 to 23°C at night on the coast. It is one of the driest months, typically with only around three rainy days, although totals vary a lot from year to year and the odd out-of-season downpour does happen. Sunshine averages around ten hours a day.

The trade winds are strong and steady, which keeps the air fresh and the humidity at its lowest. Nights in the highlands can fall to the low teens Celsius, and the Mount Batur summit at dawn is genuinely cold. The sea cools to around 26°C, and around Nusa Penida cold upwellings start to bring much cooler water to the deep dive sites, which is exactly what attracts the mola mola.

Crowds and prices

July is peak season, driven by overlapping school holidays:

  • Australia: Victoria and Queensland are on holiday until around July 11, and New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT from around July 3 until July 19 or 20. Northern Territory schools return around July 13.
  • Indonesia: end-of-year school holidays typically run from late June to around July 11.
  • Europe: UK and many European summer holidays begin in the second half of July and run into August.

There are no Indonesian national holidays in July 2027, but that hardly matters. Expect peak rates, minimum stays at some villas and busy restaurants in Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu and Ubud. Popular sights such as Tegallalang, Lempuyang and Kelingking are crowded by mid-morning, so start early. Book flights and accommodation three to six months ahead.

Ceremonies and events in July 2027

  • Bali Arts Festival (Pesta Kesenian Bali): the month-long festival at the Art Centre in Denpasar usually runs from mid-June to mid-July, closing in the first half of July. The 2026 edition ended on July 11.
  • Bali Kite Festival: July is the peak of kite season, driven by the steady mid-year wind. In 2026 the big traditional kite gathering took place at Padang Galak Beach near Sanur on July 18 and 19, and an international competition at Mertasari Beach in Sanur from July 23 to 26. Expect similar timing in 2027 and check locally. Teams from village banjars carry kites up to several meters long, with gamelan playing as they launch.
  • Tumpek Wariga, Saturday, July 17: also called Tumpek Uduh, this is the day when trees and plants receive offerings, especially coconut and fruit trees, with prayers for a good harvest. It falls 25 days before Galungan, which in 2027 is on August 11.

What to do in Bali in July

  • Dive for mola mola. The oceanic sunfish season around Nusa Penida usually begins in July. They are most often seen at Crystal Bay and other deep sites, typically at 20 to 40 meters in cold, strong currents, so you need experience and a good operator. Reef mantas are present year-round for snorkelers.
  • Watch the kites. Spend an afternoon on the beach at Sanur or Padang Galak to see the enormous traditional kites go up.
  • See Kecak at sunset. Clear skies make the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple spectacular in July. Arrive early, as it sells out, and watch your sunglasses around the monkeys.
  • Escape to the hills and the east. Munduk, Sidemen and Amed stay relaxed even in peak season, with cool air in the mountains, rice fields, waterfalls and easy snorkeling off black-sand beaches.
  • Climb a volcano. Dry trails and clear skies make July excellent for Mount Batur and, for fit hikers with a guide, Mount Agung.

Where to base yourself

In July, where you stay matters more than in any other month. The south is lively but congested: Canggu and Seminyak traffic can turn a short drive into an hour. Uluwatu and the Bukit suit surfers and sunset lovers, Sanur offers calm water, kites and quick boats to Nusa Penida, and Ubud is busy but still the best base for culture. To trade nightlife for space, split your trip with a few nights in Munduk, Sidemen or Amed. Our where to stay in Bali guide compares the areas.

What to pack for July

  • Light clothes for the day and a warm fleece or jacket for evenings in the highlands and the Batur summit.
  • A thicker wetsuit or at least a rash guard if you plan to dive Nusa Penida; upwellings can be cold.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
  • Trail shoes for volcanoes and waterfall paths.
  • A sarong and sash for temples and the Kecak performance at Uluwatu.

You can leave the rain gear at home. See the best time to visit Bali for quieter alternatives such as May, June and September, and plan around the crowds with our free itinerary builder.
