Is January a good time to visit Bali?
January is Bali's wettest month, and it is only a good time to visit if you go in with the right expectations. You will get rain on most days, high humidity and some rough seas. You will also get the island at its most lush, a fraction of the dry-season crowds after the first week, and, in 2027, the great Balinese festival of Galungan, when every village road is lined with tall, arching bamboo penjor. For culture, rice fields and a slower pace, January can be wonderful. For a pure beach holiday, pick another month or plan around the east coast.
The key is timing within the month. The New Year week is busy and expensive. From around the second week, prices fall and Bali goes quiet.
The weather: rain, heat and green
Long-term averages for the airport station near Kuta put January at around 30°C by day and 26°C at night, with roughly 260 mm of rain falling on about 18 days. That is the highest monthly total of the year, more than fifteen times the August figure.
Wet-season rain in Bali is rarely gentle. Some days follow the classic pattern of a sunny morning and a violent storm in the afternoon; others bring hours of steady rain, especially when a monsoon trough sits over the island. Low-lying streets in Kuta, Seminyak and parts of Canggu can flood briefly after a cloudburst, and traffic slows to a crawl. The sea is warm, around 29°C, but the westerly winds can make the Sanur to Nusa Penida crossing choppy and occasionally lead to cancelled boats.
There is one more January reality to know about. From roughly December to March, seasonal winds and currents wash plastic and debris onto Bali's southwest-facing beaches, including Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Canggu. Crews clean them daily, but some mornings look nothing like the postcards. The east and south coasts, from Sanur to Nusa Dua, are usually cleaner and calmer at this time of year.
Crowds and prices
The year starts at full volume. Villas and hotels charge peak rates through New Year's Eve and into the first days of January, and Indonesian travelers add to the busy feel around New Year's Day and Isra Mi'raj, a national holiday on Tuesday, January 5, 2027.
Australian summer school holidays also run through most of the month, finishing around January 26 in Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, January 31 in Western Australia and February 3 in New South Wales. That keeps family areas such as Kuta, Nusa Dua and Sanur fairly lively. Even so, once the New Year crowds fly home, January is one of the best months for deals, especially in Ubud and the highlands. Chinese New Year follows on February 6, 2027, which brings the next bump in regional visitors.
Galungan and Kuningan in January 2027
Galungan is the most important recurring festival in Balinese Hinduism, marking the victory of dharma over adharma, and the moment when ancestral spirits are believed to return to their family homes. In 2027 it falls on Wednesday, January 13, with Kuningan, the day the spirits depart, on Saturday, January 23.
The days around it are worth planning for:
- Penampahan, January 12: the day before Galungan, when families prepare feast food and finish their penjor. Expect the smell of grilled meat and the sound of chopping from every compound.
- Galungan, January 13: families in their finest temple clothes pray at village and family temples from early morning.
- The days after: relatives visit one another, and in some villages Barong figures go from house to house in a ritual called ngelawang to drive away negative forces.
- Kuningan, January 23: offerings with yellow rice, then a quieter family day.
Schools close, and many drivers and guides take a few days off, so book transport ahead. Most restaurants and attractions in tourist areas stay open. The penjor stay up for a couple of weeks afterward, so the whole second half of January looks festive. For the meaning behind it all, read about Balinese Hinduism and visit a village such as Penglipuran, famous for its orderly lane of penjor.
What to do in Bali in January
- Slow down in Ubud. The rice terraces at Tegallalang and Jatiluwih are at their greenest. Mornings are best for walking.
- See Galungan up close. Ask your host or driver if you can join their family at a temple. Dress modestly in a sarong and sash, and follow their lead.
- Pick your waterfalls carefully. Falls are at full power, but flash flooding is a real risk after heavy rain upstream. Go in the morning on a dry day and stay out of the river if the water is brown.
- Treat yourself indoors. Spa afternoons, cooking classes and evening dance performances fit the weather perfectly.
- Surf the east side. The wet season brings offshore winds to the east coast, which is when Sanur and Keramas come into their own.
- Eat the fruit. Mangosteen and durian are both in season; roadside stalls in the highlands sell them by the kilo.
Volcano treks and Nusa Penida trips are possible, but keep them flexible and check boat and weather conditions the evening before.
What to pack for January
- A good rain jacket, not just a poncho, plus a small umbrella for town.
- Quick-dry clothes and a spare pair of shoes; things do not dry overnight in this humidity.
- Sandals with real grip for wet temple steps.
- A waterproof phone pouch or dry bag.
- Strong mosquito repellent, as wet months bring more mosquitoes.
- A sarong and sash, essential if you hope to see Galungan ceremonies.
