Lombok from Bali: A Travel Guide to the Island Next Door

Lombok sits just 35 kilometers east of Bali, yet it feels a decade behind in the best possible way: wide empty bays, a towering volcano and a culture all its own.

Is Lombok worth it from Bali?

Yes, if you have at least four days to spare. Lombok rewards travelers who want space: horseshoe beaches with a single warung, surf without the crowds, waterfalls in the rainforest below Mount Rinjani and Sasak villages where weaving is still part of daily life. It is less polished than Bali, with fewer luxury options and longer drives, but that is exactly its appeal. The island is Muslim-majority, so the call to prayer, not the gamelan, sets the rhythm of the day.

Как добраться

  • Fly: Denpasar to Lombok International Airport near Praya takes about 45 minutes, with several flights a day on Wings Air and TransNusa. One-way fares often start around IDR 700,000 to 850,000 (USD 45 to 55) if you book ahead. The airport is only about 30 minutes from Kuta Lombok, which makes flying the fastest way to the south coast.
  • Fast boat: From Padang Bai, fast boats reach Bangsal or Senggigi on Lombok's west coast in roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours, often via the Gili Islands. Fares are similar to Gili tickets, from around IDR 270,000. This makes sense if you are heading to Senggigi, the Gilis or the north.
  • Public ferry: The car ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar runs around the clock, roughly every one and a half to two hours, and takes about 4 to 6 hours. A foot passenger pays around IDR 50,000 to 60,000. It is slow but cheap, and the only practical choice if you are bringing a vehicle.

Grab and Gojek work in parts of Lombok, but most visitors hire a car with driver for day trips, agreeing the price and route in advance, or rent a scooter in Kuta.

Kuta Lombok and the south coast

Kuta Lombok, not to be confused with Bali's Kuta, is the base for the south. It has grown fast around the Mandalika development and its MotoGP circuit, but it is still a small surf town of guesthouses, cafes and a weekly rhythm set by the swell. From here, a coastline of bays and headlands runs in both directions.

  • Tanjung Aan: about 15 minutes east, a wide double bay of pale, coarse sand. Climb Bukit Merese at its western end for one of the best sunsets on the island.
  • Mawun: about 20 minutes west, an almost enclosed horseshoe with calm, clear water in the dry season, good for swimming.
  • Selong Belanak: around 40 minutes west, a long crescent with gentle, sandy-bottomed waves. It is one of the best places in Indonesia to learn to surf, with board rentals and lessons on the beach.
  • Gerupuk: east of Tanjung Aan, where local boatmen run surfers out to reef breaks in the bay.

Expect small parking or entry fees of a few thousand rupiah at most beaches, and persistent but friendly sellers at the busier ones. Bring water, shade and cash.

Sade and Sasak culture

The Sasak are Lombok's indigenous people, and Sade, about 10 kilometers from the airport on the road to Kuta, is the most visited traditional village. Its thatched houses, rice barns and earth floors are real homes, about 150 of them, and village guides explain the architecture, weaving and marriage customs in a visit of 30 to 60 minutes. There is no fixed ticket; visitors usually leave a donation of around IDR 20,000 to 50,000 and tip the guide. Sade is touristy, but it is a genuine community and a good introduction. Nearby Ende village is smaller and quieter.

Senggigi and the west coast

Senggigi was Lombok's original resort strip, and it remains the place for sunsets across the strait toward Mount Agung. It is quieter than it was a decade ago, which suits travelers who want a calm hotel base. The coastal road north toward Malimbu has some of the island's finest viewpoints, and the clifftop Pura Batu Bolong is a reminder of Lombok's Balinese Hindu community in the west. Senggigi is also a convenient jumping-off point for the Gilis.

Waterfalls below Rinjani

In the village of Senaru, on Rinjani's northern slopes, two waterfalls make a classic day trip. Sendang Gile is about 10 minutes' walk from the entrance down a stairway through the forest. Tiu Kelep, taller and more dramatic, is roughly another 25 minutes on, with a river crossing and slippery rocks. Entry is around IDR 30,000, and a local guide, reported at around IDR 250,000 per group, is now expected. Wear sandals with grip. Senaru is about two hours' drive from Senggigi and three and a half from Kuta, so leave early or stay a night in the cool hills.

Best time to go

The dry season, roughly May to October, brings the clearest water, the best surf conditions in the south and open trails on Rinjani. The wet season, roughly November to March, turns the island green and the waterfalls at their fullest, but brings heavy afternoon rain, rougher crossings and closures on the volcano. During Ramadan, which in 2027 falls roughly from February into early March, dress modestly and expect some restaurants to close during the day outside tourist areas.

How many days you need

  • 3 to 4 days: Kuta Lombok and the south coast beaches, with a visit to Sade.
  • 5 to 7 days: add Senggigi and the Senaru waterfalls, or two nights on a Gili island.
  • 8 to 10 days: add a two- or three-day Rinjani trek and finish on the Gilis.

A smooth route is to fly from Denpasar to Lombok, work your way from the south coast to Senaru and Senggigi, then take a fast boat from the Gilis back to Bali.
