How Many Days Do You Need in Bali? Routes for 5, 7, 10 and 14 Days

Bali rewards slow travel far more than box-ticking. Here is how many days you really need, with four ready-made routes and the honest drive times that hold them together.

Ubud

The short answer

Seven to ten days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Bali. A week gives you two bases, usually Ubud for rice terraces and temples and the south coast for beaches and sunsets, without spending your holiday in a car. Ten days lets you add the quieter east, and two weeks lets you loop the island properly. Five days works if you keep it to two bases and accept you are sampling rather than seeing.

The reason is simple: Bali looks small on a map, but it is not quick to cross. Roads are narrow and winding, and traffic in the south can turn a 20 km trip into an hour. The single best planning rule is fewer bases, longer stays. Every move costs you most of a morning.

Drive times that shape every route

These are realistic daytime averages by private car. Add time on weekends, in the afternoon rush and during ceremonies, when village roads can close for processions.

  • Airport to Seminyak: around 15 to 25 minutes
  • Airport to Canggu: around 35 to 50 minutes
  • Airport to Ubud: around 60 to 90 minutes, longer at peak times
  • Canggu or Seminyak to Ubud: around 1.5 hours
  • Uluwatu to Ubud: around 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Sanur to Ubud: around 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Ubud to Sidemen: around 1.5 hours
  • Ubud to Munduk: around 2 hours
  • Ubud to Amed or Lovina: around 3 hours
  • Sanur to Nusa Penida by fast boat: around 30 to 45 minutes

A private driver for a full day typically costs around IDR 700,000 to 1,200,000 (US$40 to $65), and on moving days it turns the transfer into a sightseeing trip, with stops at a temple, a waterfall or a warung along the way.

Bali in 5 days

2 nights Ubud, 3 nights Uluwatu or Canggu

Land and head straight to Ubud while you still have energy. Spend your full day on the classics: an early start at Tegallalang or the Campuhan Ridge walk, the water temple at Tirta Empul, and the Sacred Monkey Forest in the late afternoon. If you are up for a 3 a.m. alarm, swap one morning for a Mount Batur sunrise trek.

Then drive down to the coast, around 2.5 to 3 hours to Uluwatu or 1.5 hours to Canggu. Uluwatu gives you cliff-top beaches like Bingin and Padang Padang and the Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple at sunset. Canggu is livelier, with cafes, surf and beach bars. Either is close to the airport for your flight home.

Bali in 7 days

3 nights Ubud, 1 night Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida, 3 nights Uluwatu

Three nights in Ubud lets you do the town at an easy pace plus one bigger day out, either Batur and the Kintamani caldera or the waterfalls around Gianyar such as Tibumana and Tukad Cepung.

From Ubud it is under an hour to Sanur harbor for a fast boat to the Nusa islands. A night on Penida lets you see Kelingking and Broken Beach before the day-trip crowds arrive; Lembongan is gentler, with snorkeling and the Yellow Bridge to Ceningan. Boat back to Sanur and transfer to Uluwatu, around an hour, for three nights of beaches and sunsets. If boats are not your thing, simply give Ubud and the south one extra night each.

Bali in 10 days

3 nights Ubud, 2 nights Sidemen, 2 nights Amed, 3 nights south coast

This is the route that shows you how varied Bali is. After Ubud, drive about 1.5 hours east to Sidemen, a valley of rice terraces and weaving villages under Mount Agung that feels like Ubud did decades ago. Walk the paddies, visit a songket workshop and enjoy the silence.

Continue to Amed, roughly 1.5 hours further via Amlapura, stopping at the Tirta Gangga water palace on the way. Amed is a string of black-sand fishing villages with some of Bali's easiest reef snorkeling and the USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben nearby. Lempuyang Temple, with its famous gate, is close too; go early.

The longest leg comes last: Amed to the south coast takes around three hours or more, so leave after breakfast. Finish with three nights in Uluwatu, Canggu or Sanur before flying out.

Bali in 14 days

3 nights Ubud, 2 nights Sidemen, 3 nights Amed, 2 nights Munduk, 2 nights Canggu, 2 nights Uluwatu

Two weeks lets you loop the whole island. Follow the 10-day route to Amed, adding a slow day to dive or simply swim off the beach. Then drive the north coast west, a long but scenic day with a possible stop at Lovina, and climb into the hills to Munduk. Up here the air is cool, the slopes are covered in clove and coffee, and the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan sit in the forest below. Spend a day on the Munduk waterfalls and Ulun Danu Beratan temple on Lake Beratan.

From Munduk it is around 2.5 to 3 hours down through Tabanan to Canggu, passing close to Jatiluwih's UNESCO rice terraces and Tanah Lot. Two nights in Canggu, two in Uluwatu, and you fly home having seen mountains, coast, reef and rice.

If you would rather add the Nusa islands, drop one Canggu and one Uluwatu night and spend two nights on Nusa Penida or Lembongan instead.

Making the most of your days

  • Arrive with a plan for night one. Many flights land in the evening. Sleep near the airport or in Seminyak if you land late, and start the drive to Ubud fresh the next morning.
  • Front-load the hills, finish at the beach. Ending in the south keeps you close to the airport and gives you lazy final days.
  • Avoid moving on Nyepi. On Monday, March 8, 2027 the island shuts down for 24 hours, including the airport and all roads.
  • Do not overpack the itinerary. Ceremonies, rain showers and long lunches are part of Bali. Leave room for them.
