The short answer
Most visitors to Bali need a Visa on Arrival (VoA). Current fee: IDR 500,000 (about US$30). It allows a stay of up to 30 days and can be extended once for another 30. You can buy it online in advance as an e-VOA at the official portal, evisa.imigrasi.go.id, or at the counter after landing. On top of the visa, every foreign tourist pays Bali's IDR 150,000 (about US$9) tourist levy, and arrivals complete the free All Indonesia declaration. Your passport needs at least six months of validity.
That is the whole picture in one paragraph. The details below will save you time in the arrivals hall at Ngurah Rai, and a few of them can save you from being turned around at check-in.
Visa on Arrival and e-VOA
The VoA is a single-entry visit visa for tourism. Indonesian immigration publishes the list of eligible nationalities, currently around 97 of them, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Germany. Check that your nationality is on the current list before you book, because it is set by immigration policy and changes from time to time. Citizens of countries not on the list apply for a different visa through the same e-visa portal before departure.
You have two ways to get it:
- e-VOA (recommended): apply on evisa.imigrasi.go.id before you fly and pay by Visa, Mastercard or JCB card. Once approved, a download link for the visa is sent to your email. One application can cover up to five people, and an issued e-VOA must be used within 90 days.
- VoA at the airport: pay at the counter in the arrivals hall, in rupiah or US dollars, then queue for immigration. It works, but after a long-haul flight that second queue can be slow at peak times.
Either way, no sponsor is needed. You will need your passport, a recent photo for the online version and a return or onward ticket. Use only the official government portal; lookalike websites charge inflated fees for the same visa.
A price change has been proposed. In August 2026 the Directorate General of Immigration announced plans for a two-tier fee: IDR 750,000 for the e-VOA and IDR 1,000,000 for a VoA bought on arrival. As of October 20, 2026, the new fees had not been confirmed on official immigration channels, and immigration offices still list the fee as IDR 500,000. Check the official portal before you pay.
How long you can stay and how to extend
The VoA gives you up to 30 days from your entry date. It can be extended once for another 30 days, for a maximum of 60 days, and the extension costs the same IDR 500,000. An e-VOA can be extended online through the e-visa portal; a VoA bought at the airport is extended at an immigration office. The online window opens 14 days before your permit expires and closes one day before, and you need a valid ticket out of Indonesia. After paying, you are given a photo appointment at the immigration office assigned to the address you entered, so do not leave it to your last few days.
Overstaying is expensive: the fine is IDR 1,000,000 per day. The VoA cannot be converted into another permit, so after 60 days you must leave. It is for tourism, and immigration is explicit that holders may not sell goods or services or be paid for work in Indonesia. If you want a longer first stay, the C1 tourist visa allows 60 days, extendable to a total of 180, and must be arranged online before you arrive.
Who can enter visa-free
Visa-free entry for tourism is limited to citizens of ASEAN countries, such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. The stay is up to 30 days, costs nothing, and cannot be extended. Everyone else, including Australians, Americans and Europeans, needs a visa.
The Bali tourist levy
Every international tourist traveling in Bali pays a one-time levy of IDR 150,000 per person, per trip. It funds the protection of Balinese culture and the environment, and it is separate from the visa.
The official place to pay online is lovebali.baliprov.go.id, or the Love Bali app. Payment is cashless: Visa, Mastercard, American Express or JCB cards, bank transfer, virtual account, UnionPay or QRIS. After paying you receive a levy voucher with a QR code by email, so enter an address you can access. You can also pay at counters at Bali's airport and seaports, or at registered hotels, travel agents and attractions, but paying before you fly is faster.
Some groups are exempt: holders of diplomatic and official visas, transport crew, KITAS and KITAP holders, and holders of family-unification and student visas. Golden visa holders and certain other visa holders are also exempt but must apply for the exemption through the Love Bali system. Ignore any website other than Love Bali that offers to collect the levy.
The All Indonesia arrival card
Since September 1, 2025, international arrivals at Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai airport complete the All Indonesia declaration, at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id. It merges the immigration, customs, health and quarantine questions into one digital form and replaces the old electronic customs declaration (e-CD). It is free, and you can submit it up to three days before arrival. Keep the QR code on your phone, because you will show it at immigration and customs.
Passport, tickets, customs and arrival-day checklist
- Passport: valid for at least six months from your arrival date. Airlines can refuse boarding if it falls short.
- Onward ticket: have proof you will leave Indonesia, either a return flight or an onward ticket. It is a formal visa requirement, and airlines and officers can ask for it.
- Customs: cash of IDR 100 million (about US$6,000) or more, or the equivalent in foreign currency, must be declared, and failing to do so carries a 10 percent penalty. Adults may bring in 1 liter of alcohol and 200 cigarettes duty-free, and personal goods bought abroad are exempt up to US$500 per person. Fresh food, plants and animals need quarantine clearance, and drug laws are severe.
- Before you fly: e-VOA approved and saved, Love Bali voucher in your email, All Indonesia QR code ready, and the address of your first night's stay on hand.
Do those four things at home and the walk from the plane to your driver at Bali airport can take well under an hour.
