Balian Beach

A river-mouth surf beach on Bali's quiet west coast

Balian Beach sits on Bali's west coast in Tabanan, where the Balian River meets the Indian Ocean. A black-sand beach with consistent waves, it has become a favorite among surfers seeking a quieter alternative to the crowded breaks of the south, with a few guesthouses and warungs scattered along the shore. Many visitors come for a few days and stay much longer, drawn by the slower pace.

The main peak breaks at the river mouth, producing a left and a right that suit intermediate to advanced surfers. On very small days, the inside can work for improving surfers, while bigger swells call for experience. The river can carry strong currents, and murky water after heavy rain is best avoided. The beach itself is better for watching than swimming.

The drive to Balian passes through rice fields and villages, and the beach feels a world away from the south. On the sand, surfers rest between sessions, and the river winds lazily into the sea. In the evening, the sun sets over the ocean, lighting up the waves and the dark sand, and surfers gather on the terraces to watch the last sets roll in.

Good to know
